Data and Methodology of Mobile App Trends 2024

In 2023, Shape conducted a survey with over 3000 Danish people between 18 and 70 years of age about their app preferences. It’s one of the largest studies on app usage ever conducted in Denmark.

Throughout the years the app store ratings has been one of the main tools for quantitatively qualifying the success of an app. However, Shape felt the need for a deeper level of quantifiable insights into what drives the success of an app.

150 different apps were tested based on nine different sub-components:

  • Reliability
  • Good content
  • Usability
  • Provides overview
  • Simplifies everyday life
  • Smart features
  • Relevant notifications
  • Good design
  • Easy communication

These compound into four overall categories:

  • Is it satisfying?
  • Is it relevant?
  • Does it provide value?
  • Which app is the best of its kind?

Together these components provided an average App Trends Score. Out of the study came a model, which is applicable for all apps and provides a basis for comparison.

The sub-components on the outside of the model are the drivers of the model and encompass different themes. These are the ones, which affect the App Trends Score, and it’s here you work to bring up the score.

Mobile App Trends has been conducted to help map out flaws and untapped potential and as a means of comparison in a very competitive market.
