REMA 1000 app has revolutionised Denmark's online grocery delivery landscape with its innovative, crowdsourced delivery model. The REMA 1000 app merges sharing economy principles with state-of-the-art app technology, redefining standards in online grocery shopping, making delivery of fresh products both faster, cheaper and more environmentally friendly.
Online grocery shopping is growing rapidly and synonymous with convenience. However, traditional online supermarkets are limited by their service capabilities and face high operational costs due to an extensive logistics infrastructure, including distribution centres and delivery fleets. As a successful grocery discounter, REMA 1000 identified an opportunity to venture into this sector, but was challenged by the high costs associated with delivering low-margin products.

To surpass the constraints of conventional models, REMA 1000 innovated and designed an alternative approach. The app and platform facilitate a purely community-driven delivery model. Customers place orders through the REMA 1000 app, and local community members shop at nearby REMA 1000 stores and deliver the items to those who need to stay at home. The concept, though straightforward, leverages complex auction principles and AI to enhance reliability and the user experience. The unique and decentralised approach offers several new opportunities:
A more flexible shopping experience: The app essentially connects two individuals from the local community, creating a unique 1:1 connection. This direct interaction allows both parties to tailor and modify the shopping experience to suit their needs just before delivery. Together, they can adjust the delivery time and place, as well as the products in the final order, ensuring a personalised and flexible service.
Our role involved design and developing comprehensive iOS and Android apps, along with the foundational backend infrastructure for the REMA 1000 ecosystem. The integration of AI and ongoing optimisation of UX and business systems have been crucial for success.
In 2021, Local-shoppers collectively covered a distance equal to 80 trips around the Earth, demonstrating the platform’s widespread use and impact. It is an dual-function app.
